At dusk this evening, the innogy tower on Opernplatz in Essen will be lit up in the colours of the rainbow. The occasion is tomorrow’s International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). The lighting up of the tower was initiated by the recently founded internal innogy network “LGBT&friends” (LGBT: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), whose aim is to contribute towards a respectful, prejudice-free and open working culture. The LGBT network was established from among innogy employees and has received the express support of the Executive Board of innogy SE.

Hans Bünting, Chief Operating Officer Renewables at innogy SE and sponsor of the LGBT network explained what motivated innogy: “By lighting up the tower of our Group headquarters we are sending out a visible signal for diversity, solidarity and anti-discrimination. innogy stands for openness towards different worldviews, religions and ways of life, and we want to demonstrate this. Lived diversity is a great enrichment for our company.”

The International Day Against Homophobia takes place every year on 17 May. The background is the World Health Organisation’s declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness in 1992. In Germany there is a coincidence between the date 17.5. and the former paragraph 175 of the German Criminal Code, which listed homosexuality as a punishable crime in the Federal Republic of Germany until as late as 1969.

Not only on the International Day Against Homophobia, innogy is demonstrating its clear commitment to diversity.
