From August 5th to 8th the 20th Hanse Sail Rostock in the 20th year of the German Reunification takes place. It is one of the biggest meetings of traditional sailing ships all over the world. More than 200 ships are expected to celebrate the jubilee, among them the two biggest still operating windjammers: "Sedov" (1921) and "Kruzenshtern" (1926). Eight month to go, and already more than 120 ships have announced their participation. One of them is "Gulden Leuw", a 70 meter long 3-masted topsail schooner that is being built by two young and motivated skipperfamilies from Kampen (Netherlands).
The prelude of the Sail is the 2nd Haikutter Race from Nysted (Denmark) to Rostock on August 4th, one day before the official opening of the 20th Hanse Sail. The "Parade of the Nations" on the river Warnow with flags of the participating countries will be a beautiful maritime finale of the four sailing days.
This year's partner country is the republic of Lithuania. A "Kurrenkahn", a traditional fisherboat, will come from Klaipeda. It will be the center of an interactive presentation shown by the shipping museums of the Baltic Sea Area: Karlskrona, Gdansk, Klaipeda and Rostock. The presentation is a result of the EU-project "SeaSide".
On the market beneath a dozen stages and fun rides there will be a cogs- and hanseatic market, a maritime rag-fair, a manufacturer and pottery market, an art path, a slav- and a fishmarket.
To mark the jubilee of the 20th Hanse Sail a representive exhibition dealing with the history of the maritime event will be shown in the townhall. Partners, friends, pioneers and sponsors of the Hanse Sail will be invited to an open-air commemorative event on Friday, 6th of August.
In the anniversary year that which belongs together grows together. The two maritime events close ranks and build the framework for a Rostocker and Warnemünder midsummer that lasts five weeks. It is, if you want so, the maritime summer festival of the german reunification!
