- Continental tires prove their worth in a home match at the Hockenheimring
- Fachhochschule [University of Applied Sciences] Zwickau drives to third place in the overall rankings
- Continental Electric/Electronic Architecture Award goes to Electric Team, Fachhochschule [University of Applied Sciences] Zwickau
Some 2,000 spectators, 77 teams, four days, eight disciplines - those are the key figures for the Formula Student Germany 2010. At this year's major VDI event at the Hockenheimring, many teams relied once again on technology and experience from Continental and successfully demonstrated what they are capable of. This year the international automotive supplier again provided a tire service truck supported 31 teams worldwide with highlyspecialized vehicle components and technical knowhow. The Continental Electric/Electronic Architecture Award, which was awarded for the first time this year, goes to the Electric Team of the Fachhochschule [University of Applied Sciences] Zwickau. The Top team drove with Continental to third place in the overall rankings.
"Like last year, the teams supported by Continental put in a very good performance. With tires, battery systems, ABS, sensor systems and various other highly specialized components, we offer the engineers of tomorrow an extensive overall package in international design competition," explains Heinz-Gerhard Wente, Continental Executive Board member for human resources.
This year was the fifth time the major VDI event Formula Student Germany was held at the Hockenheimring. Future engineers from international universities had one year to design and build a oneseater prototype on their own, which was evaluated by experts from the automotive industry in three static categories and five dynamic disciplines. This year, the students competed not only with classic combustions engines, but for the first time vied against other teams in a new competition with electric vehicles. In the world's first Formula Student Electric, the teams had to design a competitive racing car equipped with a purely electric engine as drive source plus a battery.
As part of the design event of the Formula Student Electric, Continental presented the Electric/Electronic Architecture Award, which the Electric Team from the Fachhochschule [University of Applied Sciences] Zwickau took home. During the event, the team demonstrated extraordinary development achievements regarding networking within the vehicle and the provision of information that is important for the driver, duly impressing the independent design jury. In the classic combustions engines competition the Zwickau team took third place in the overall ranking. The University of Stralsund landed at place ten in the overall ranking.
The teams supported by Continental have been invited to an "after race" on September 25 and 26 at the ContiDrom test track near Celle, where the future engineers will have a chance to test their race car. The event also provides the opportunity for the participants to share their experience with other teams and the engineers from Continental. In addition, initial ideas and plans for the Formula Student Race 2011 are to be developed at the event.
