Roczen races to 3rd place in Mantova MX2 qualifying

Bensheim, (lifePR) - Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2's Ken Roczen recovered from a dramatic outing in the MX2 Qualification Heat for the Grand Prix of Lombardia at Mantova to take third position in the gate for the second round of 15 in the FIM World Championship.

The presence of four racing categories in the first event in Western Europe this year created a tough and technical track at the Italian venue. The Mantova sand - a 1550m layout - was littered with bumps and ripples and became a rougher prospect as the day wore on.

Roczen posted reasonably quick lap-times in the two practice sessions to sit in the middle of the top-10 as team-mate Arnaud Tonus also made progress getting dialled-in to the terrain.

The German teenager made an average start in the Heat race but pushed hard to close on the top three when he lost the front wheel in a 180 degree turn and slipped off his RM-Z250. Remounting, the 15 year old was then inventive with his lines and approach and passed Jeremy Van Horebeek and Steven Frossard for a well-earned third spot. Tonus was riding solidly in seventh place until his bike developed a technical problem on the last lap and he could not reach the finish. The Swiss will enter the gate 22nd for tomorrow's motos.

Ken Roczen:

"Practice went OK and I am not the kind of rider who can push like crazy for a flying lap. My start was really bad in the Heat race and I tried to catch the guys. I made a mistake and had a crash but got up quickly. I found some useful lines that won me some time. It is pretty hard to pass out there but if you have a good eye you can always find something. I am looking forward to tomorrow."

Arnaud Tonus:

"The track is much harder than what we had here for the International in February and it was hard to get a good rhythm at the beginning. I got better and better though and the race was going well until I had a small problem with the bike. I will just have to hope for a good start tomorrow from a low place in the gate."
