There is a special sunlight which covers objects with polished contours. It is called luster.
Hans-Christian Schinks' first recognized series was created in 1989 in the underground railway of Pyongyang, dozens of meters below daylight. Following in the 90's, were investigations of underground parking lots and office spaces. In the middle of the last decade, Schink started the series "Traffic Projects German Unity". The monumental result, made over the course of ten years, showed exclusively overcast skies.
Upon invitation of the Villa Aurora, he spent three months of 2002 in Los Angeles. The California sun rarely disappeared behind clouds, and Schink needed white skies to set his scenes into the right light. He resorted to backlight photography, and in some pictures of the LA series there appears a special luster. In the following years, Schink visited Peru, Vietnam, Dubai, Brazil and Cambodia. Again and again he came across this kind of light.
In 2003, in the California Mojave Desert, Schink took his first photograph of the sun itself. He used black and white film and expanded the exposure time up to one whole hour. Through a polarization effect, the sun appeared to be a black line, but the landscape was no longer visible. Finally, two years and many technical experiments later, Schink seemed satisfied with the results and began his series "1 h". He found his scenes on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, in Japan, Germany, the Algerian Hoggar, Oman, Dubai, California and Cambodia. In March 2008, Schink received the REAL Photography Award - one of the highest paying photography prizes in the world - for one of the pictures in that series.
