InnoTrans 2012: New Paths in Urban Transport

(lifePR) (Berlin, ) .
- Mobility is the most important infrastructure challenge in urban centers
- ContiTech Air Spring Systems in global demand as supplier for urban transport solutions and high-speed trains

More than half of the world's population lives in urban centers and megacities with millions of inhabitants. The home and workplace are often far apart, increasing the importance of public transport. And as the population increases, so too do the challenges associated with freight and business traffic. What is needed are new urban mobility concepts and suitable innovative technology. "Whenever millions of people frequently need to be transported locally or over long distances, air springs are an essential component," says Hannes Friederichsen, Head of the air suspension specialist ContiTech Air Spring Systems. "These ensure optimal traveling comfort and safety in trams, suburban railways, local and regional trains, and high-speed trains alike."

Air springs for urban transport

Specialist technological expertise, huge product diversity, and excellent material quality have helped to make the air spring systems developed by ContiTech Air Spring Systems one of the products of choice when it comes to suspension solutions for rail vehicles. This is why bus and rail transport manufacturers as well as urban transport operators around the globe rely on ContiTech. Subway passengers all over the world – from London, Paris, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro to Sydney, Mexico City, Los Angeles, and Washington – all travel on ContiTech air spring products. ContiTech is particularly well represented in China, where nearly all of the eleven metro lines in Shanghai, which is home to 20 million people, are equipped with ContiTech air spring systems. In India, the air spring systems for the Delhi RS7 metro were installed in the local ContiTech plant. And in Germany, Deutsche Bahn’s new generation of double-decker coaches is fitted with ContiTech air spring systems.

Expertise for high-speed trains

Inter-city links are every bit as important for the functioning of larger urban centers too. Following the success of the Siemens VELARO China high-speed trains, which are equipped with ContiTech air springs, the company was awarded a contract to equip the latest generation of high-speed trains – the CRH 3 – which are built under license in China and operate on a number of routes, including between Beijing and Shanghai. The ZEFIRO Italy, Bombardier’s first high-speed train in Europe, also features ContiTech air spring systems.

ContiTech will also play a key role in transporting people en masse during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. Passengers will enjoy the benefits of ContiTech air springs when traveling in the trains operating on the high-speed route between Moscow and Sochi. This is a key component of the traffic infrastructure for the Winter Olympics, which is expected to draw visitors numbering in the millions.

“This huge international success is all thanks to our global site and service structure. From our eight plants in China, Germany, India, Korea, Mexico, and Turkey, we serve key markets with high-quality, locally made products. For us, this means that wherever in the world our help and expertise is needed, our employees are on hand almost instantly,” says Hannes Friederichsen.
