Already on the 21st of June 2012 the "REWE Green Building - the future concept" in Berlin was voted one of the 100 Best Sustainability Solutions in the world by Sustainia in Rio de Janeiro during the United Nations RIO+20 conference.
Now it has been voted the winner of the category "Best Building Solution" and finally being one of the finalists for the Sustainia Award. As a virtual world model, "Sustainia" demonstrates how people will live in 2020, if sustainability technologies are deployed on a wide-range today.
Internationally renowned sustainability experts like Connie Hedegaard (European Union Climate Action Commissioner), Rajendra Pachauri (Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC), the former Prime Minister of Norway, Gro Harem Brundtland and Arnold Schwarzenegger (former Governor of California) selected the most sustainable solutions from industry and organisations.
We are happy and proud that the Sustainia Judge Committee has recognised our sustainable, carbon neutral architecture as the Best Building Solution and voted our architectural work to be among the finalists for the Sustainia Award in Copenhagen, says Dipl.-Ing. architect Jürgen Koch from Koch Architekten 4greenArchitecture in Dusseldorf (Germany).
The "REWE Green Building - the future concept" in Berlin has a sustainable construction of wood and wood based materials from sustainable forestry, recycleable building materials, use of innovative green technologies and daylight, green electricity and renewable energy sources is used for operation of this carbon neutral supermarket - even having a CO2 emission saving of 435 tons due to sustainable construction.
In front of the sustainable, green supermarket, a 12 meter high tree of German origin was planted as the Symbol of Sustainability and the Origin of the natural construction materials (Wood from Sustainable Forestry). On the parking area in front of the market you can find two loading stations for electric cars.
As the REWE Green Building in Berlin was awarded "Store of the Year 2012", the managing director of HDE, Stephan Genth, praised the REWE Green Building as "innovative and ground-breaking" during the award ceremonies in Berlin. "REWE Group's claim of environmental sustainability is made tangible and understandable for customers by the construction of the REWE Green Building," noted Genth. "The company has set a genuine benchmark in the field of 'sustainability' and proves in measurable fashion that it is possible to save a lot of money using environmentally-friendly technologies. At the same time being the chief architect of Koch Architekten 4greenArchitecture, but also the Chairman of the Technical Division Architecture at the VDI (Association of German Engineers), Jürgen Koch is actively involved in the voluntary work at the VDI, developing new standards and regulations for architects and engineers, but also writing political papers for advice of the German Government in the concern of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency in Buildings and in the Construction sector.

Being the European Green Capital 2014, Copenhagen is even now aiming for higher targets! We hope that other cities and countries will become inspired by these initiatives and follow very soon!
