The kick-off for the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam 2009 on the Dachstein glacier had many surprising moments to offer! At first, Friday 13th didn't only present itself from the sunny side, however, the changing conditions demanded an extremely high rider level. Under the slogan "Shake the Tree", the tree was shaken well enough until all riders for the final round on Saturday have been fixed.
Heavy fog and complicated conditions were prevailing in the morning at the first day of the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam. Nevertheless, the lousy weather could still not impress the professional riders and one after another showed off their skills. After a rather long delay in the morning, the qualifications finally started at 11:00 after the riders seized the opportunity for an extensive warm-up. At first, it seemed that the originally planned two runs in the morning and in the afternoon were pooled into one single run. But in the end the god of snowboarding decided to let the sun shine and everything went on schedule.
The motivated shaping-crew around QParks-Parkdesigner Bernd Mandlberger gave their best and provided an awesome set-up. A Kinked-Butterbox, two large kickers with 12m and 18m tables, a snow-funbox with 13m and an all-concluding wallride were presented in perfect condition. In addition there were 2 smaller kickers with 10 m and 13 m tables installed at the take-offs. The lavish public park next to the beginner area has opened its doors for all the snowhungry, paving the way for everyone's individual slopestyle experience.
At the contest, the international boarders-elite pulled out all the stops in order to land a place in the finals on Saturday. The 87 riders were stoked up by the audience and the male top-ten as well as the female top-five can look forward to the finale spectacle tomorrow.
Absolutely worth seeing was the performance of Braaten Gjermund (NOR) who made the masses cheer with his stunning tricks (backside 900, Cab 900, Frontside 360) and secured himself a starting place for tomorrow. Simon Gruber (ITA) could also show his talent with a switch backside 540, a frontside 720, backside 720 and a finalizing handplant at the wall and excitedly looks forward to his finale run-out.
No less thrilling and spectacular was the lady's competition: Aimee Fuller (GBR) and Basa Stevulova (SVK) as well as Serena Shaw (USA) displayed outstanding moves and made won the first three places. Unfortunately due to the delay in the morning, the second run had to be postponed to Saturday morning.
In the evening the relaxed come-together, action and party shifts from the summit to the valley. At 8 p.m. the crème-de-la-crème of media, industry and riders will meet at the Gala-Dinner inside the Hohenhaus Tenne. At the Blue Tomato Party under the slogan "Peace and Love" from 10 p.m. until open end, the successful day will be celebrated until the morning lights.
After such impressions of the first day at the Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam, we can only look forward to the finals!
