Questions of Inactivity
Thursday, March 30, 2017, 7 pm(lifePR) ( Berlin, )
The exhibition Hours and Hours of Inactivity presents the recipients of the Berlin Senate’s 2016 Art Fellowship. It borrows its title from a line in a song by one of the participating artists, Mariechen Danz, and her band UNMAP, reflecting the curatorial approach of looking at both new and older works, thus placing the complex dynamics and the continuity of the artistic practices in the foreground.
The panel discussion Questions of Inactivity opens up a plethora of questions alluded to in the exhibition’s title. Inactivity is a contested subject. It rings vast questions, whether reflecting potential resistance to the current wave of populism or non-participation in exploitative work-conditions. Rather than assuming ‘one’ common understanding of inactivity, this evening functions as a three-way presentation followed by a discussion. Hannah Black, Caroline Busta, and Kerstin Stakemeier each reflect on the term ‘inactivity’ from their different viewpoints, offering three disparate insights into this notion. While not aiming to exhaust the question of inactivity in its full complexity, the event provides a shared thinking of different iterations of inactivity—political, repressive or social—from a city that has long been seen as one of the last sites of escape from high-pitched production.
