The Internationale Gesellschaft der Bildenden Künste (IGBK) is criticizing the final confirmation of the Hungarian politician Tibor Navracsics as new EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport

(lifePR) ( Berlin, )
By nominating Navracsics, the President-elect of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, overrides both, the vote of the European Culture Committee and the protests of many European cultural organizations. After the hearing, the Culture Committee approved Tibor Navracsics as a candidate worthy to be one of the Commissioners, but found him unfit for the job of Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Citizenship. In addition the organization Culture Action Europe, bringing together individuals and legal entities and giving voice to over 80.000 arts and culture players across Europe, criticized the nomination. [1]

As former Hungarian minister of justice in the cabinet of FIDESZ, the right-conservative governing party, Tibor Navracsics is jointly responsible for radical restrictions of the cultural diversity within the society. In the Hungarian art and culture scene even the reproach of 'cooptation' was raised, since budget cutbacks and redeployments by the government have been exerted massive political pressure on important museums and galleries for years.

The call for a qualified personality, representing the freedom of expression and the diversity of culture and art in Europe, remains unheard. Tibor Navracsics' department is solely reduced by the responsibility for 'citizenship'.
