After a 45 years long slumber, last winter the iconic ice race in Zell am See celebrated an impressive revival with the new GP Ice Race on the old airfield in Zell. Under azure blue skies thousands of spectators and more than 200 international journalists witnessed a spectacular show on ice and snow featuring a wide array from historic to modern race and rally cars, driven by more than 130 competitors. Encouraged by this debut success, the initiators of the event and founders of Greger Porsche Classic Cars, Ferdinand Porsche and Vinzenz Greger, will host the second edition on 1th and 2nd February 2020.
“We never expected such a great success, when we had the idea to re-ignite the famous ice races in Zell am See, which have been run between 1937 and 1974, with a modern interpretation,” emphasized Ferdinand Porsche from Zell am See, together with Nuremberg born Vinzenz Greger initiator of the event and co-founder of Greger Porsche Classic Cars (Vienna).
Last January, celebrities and famous race and rally drivers alike were present showcasing a wide array from historic to modern race and rally cars. In total, more than 130 competitors offered a spectacular show on ice and snow. “We want to continue our concept offering a weekend of down-to-earth motorsport. Based on the valuable experience we collected during the successful 2019 edition, we want to enlarge the array of historic race and rally cars on the ice track. We are talking to our partners and sponsors about the 2020 event. Besides the renewed full support of the local Tourism Board Zell am See-Kaprun, we are happy, that we can announce a new automotive partner soon, who will join us for the next GP Ice Race,” says Vinzenz Greger.
The second modern edition of the once legendary event, organised again under the name of GP Ice Race, will continue to feature a lot of well-known elements. On the historic ice track on the old airfield, amateur and professional drivers, teams and manufacturers will compete spectacularly in various categories. The ancient sport of skijoring and show runs by star drivers are on the two-day program as well.
