Clarry Bartha takes over as Artistic Director of DEBUT 2016

(lifePR) ( Igersheim, )
Clarry Bartha has agreed to take over as Artistic Director of DEBUT 2016, the 8th European Opera Singing Competition. The Swedish-born soprano, who lives in Boxberg (Main-Tauber district), has traditionally demonstrated a passionate commitment to the competition which is further underlined by her new role: her extensive professional experience as a performing artist has already stood her in good stead as a member of the judging panel.

DEBUT concerts GmbH is delighted that Clarry Bartha has consented to oversee the 8th competition as Artistic Director: she has herself performed on many of the world’s great stages and is optimally qualified to make a valuable contribution. Ms. Bartha is very much looking forward to her new challenge: “My whole life is, and always has been, dedicated to music and song, which is why it’s a privilege for me to pass on my knowledge, my abilities and my intuition to young artists with a burning desire to sing and to lend encouragement to just a few of them as they take their first career steps – and I hope I will soon be able to experience them live on stage. The artist’s profession is extremely fulfilling despite all the hard work and DEBUT can help here by providing motivation and pleasure. I’m eagerly anticipating the encounters with all those young singers – with the jury, the patron and the many music lovers both in the local region and from farther afield, and indeed the entire cooperation with the DEBUT team.”

Swedish-born soprano Clarry Bartha studied vocal technique at the Conservatorio Roma di Santa Cecilia, where she was awarded a BA and a postgraduate diploma in opera. She then took a second master’s degree in chamber music at the Accademia Santa Cecilia. She won first prize at the “Beniamino Gigli” and “Vincenzo Bellini” competitions in Macerata and Catania respectively.

Ms. Bartha made her debut at the court of the Drottningholm Palace Theatre in Stockholm in the role of Donna Anna, then played numerous other Mozart persona such as the Countess, Fiordiligi and Arminda all over Europe. From 1987 to 1994, she was a regular member of the Frankfurt Opera ensemble, singing a variety of roles including Marschallin, Rusalka, Desdemona, Tatiana, Fiordiligi, Arminda and Elsa.

She has been invited to give performances at the world’s leading opera houses, making recordings and films in cooperation with all the most important European orchestras, for example Les Danaides (Salieri, EMI), Guenter von Schwarzburg (Holzbauer, Naxons) or Tchaikovsky’s Women (C. Nupen – participation and recording, conducted by Ashkenazy), RAI Italiana, BBC, Radio France, Sveriges Radio, HR, Bayrischer Rundfunk, NDR and WDR.

In 2012, following a lengthy break, she sang Adelaide in Richard Strauss’ opera Arabella at the Frankfurt and Nuremberg Opera Houses. “Brünnhilde’s Final Aria” from Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” was another milestone in 2013 in Christchurch (New Zealand). She subsequently conducted masterclasses in both Australia and New Zealand. In the same year she made her debut performance as Kabanicha in L. Janacek’s opera Katja Kabanova at the Regensburg State Theatre under the direction of Brigitte Fassbaender.

In 2014, she presented an evening of chansons entitled “What was, what is and what remains” as a collaborative project in Bronnbach with seven other musicians. Together with Professor Reiner Schmidt, Ms. Bartha founded the Bronnbach Monastery Friends of Classical Music, becoming President and Artistic Director after his death in 2011. She has organized the annual concert series known as the “Sunset Concerts” in Boxberg since 1998.

Ms. Bartha has now agreed to take over as Artistic Director of DEBUT 2016, following in the footsteps of Patrick Bialdyga who held this position representing Jeunesses Musicales Germany.

DEBUT 2016

For several years now, DEBUT (www.debut.de) has attracted considerable international attention in the opera world; in a very short time this competition for up-and-coming young opera singers from all corners of the globe has become the third biggest contest of its kind in Germany. Held every second year, the competition is open to talented newcomers in the following vocal categories: soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, counter-tenor, baritone and bass.

In 2014, the organizers received 247 applications from 44 different countries; after all, DEBUT has earned itself a reputation as a launching pad for young singers hoping to embark on an international career.

Only a few weeks ago, for instance, Olga Peretyatko – the Russian soprano who was runner-up in DEBUT 2006 – opened this year’s Vienna Opera Ball together with Plácido Domingo. And Adriana Ferfecka, winner of the last competition in 2014, is a member of the ensemble at the German National Opera House in Berlin while second-placed Maria Chabounia sings at the Hamburg State Opera House.

The official opening date for applications to take part in the eight edition of the competition is April 1, 2016. The deadline for submitting applications is June 30, 2016. As usual, the venues for the event from September 19 to 24, 2016 will be Weikersheim Castle and Bad Mergentheim.
