Dr. Guido Westerwelle will be Sponsor of Gay Games VIII Cologne 2010
Between July 31 and August 7 Cologne will be the showplace for the largest sports and cultural event in the world. Approximately 12,000 athletes will take part in sports competitions and cultural exhibitions. The Cologne Gay Games are based on an Olympic structure. The opening ceremony expect 34,000 spectators, along with the 12,000 participants, at the RheinEnergie Stadium. The Gay Games are a sports and cultural event that take place every four years. The goal is to create an awareness that will develop more tolerance for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.
Guido Westerwelle has been the Chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) since 2001, and previously was the party's General Secretary. On October 28, 2009, he was named the country's foreign minister. In this position he is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He holds a Doctor of Laws degree from Bonn University. Dr. Westerwelle began openly acknowledging his homosexuality in 2001. The overwhelming acceptance of his openness is an excellent example of the ability of people with different sexual preferences to live and work together. Dr. Westerwelle's support of the VIII Gay Game Cologne 2010 is a significant contribution that should allow the participants to experience even greater acceptance throughout the competition and in their everyday lives.
