IfraExpo 2007: The record event presented a harmonious “cross-media concert”

The Annual Event of the Newspaper Industry in Vienna

(lifePR) (Darmstadt/Vienna, )
The 10,600 newspaper and media experts from 87 countries experienced a "media convergence concert" during IfraExpo 2007 in Vienna (www.ifraexpo.com). At the most important international exhibition for the newspaper industry, held this year for the first time in Vienna, the city of music, it became clear that, while print continues to play the lead, it is receiving increasing cross-media support from the Internet and mobile services. From 8 to 11 October 2007, visitors to IfraExpo in the Austrian capital found out about how the print and digital media platforms are "converging", therefore permitting cross- media publishing.

After IfraExpo 2006 in Amsterdam, this year has again set a new record for the number of exhibitors: 367 exhibitors (+9 % compared to 2006) from 33 countries showed proven and innovative technology solutions as well as new business models for publishing houses on 15,126 m² exhibition floor space in the new halls of Reed Messe Wien. These included 100 companies – mainly from Austria, the neighbouring Eastern European states and the U.S.A. – that presented their products and services for the first time at IfraExpo.

Michael Heipel, Ifra Director of Exhibitions: "This year’s covered the entire media publishing workflow – from production of the contents to distribution through different channels, such as print, Internet and mobile services – up to sales. All products and services of relevance to a modern media house were presented. Exhibition visitors had the opportunity to renew contact with colleagues from all over the world. Attractive accompanying events dealing with topics of current interest and various special displays complemented the overview of the latest technological developments offered by IfraExpo. This made IfraExpo the perfect source of inspiration and know-how."

One of the main attractions during IfraExpo was the special exhibition dedicated to the Ifra XMA Cross Media Awards 2007 (www.ifra.com/xma) competition that was held for the second time. Thirty-six publishing houses from 18 countries entered a total of 50 projects for Ifra XMA 2007. This year’s focus was on cross-media projects for "creating and building communities". The new winners (in three circulation categories) were presented and awarded their prizes on the evening of the first exhibition day.

IfraExpo 2007 in numbers

This year’s IfraExpo, held in the two exhibition halls of Reed Messe in Vienna, recorded the highest number of exhibitors since the first Ifra exhibition in 1970: 367 (2006 in Amsterdam: 336) exhibitors, including all leading companies, from 33 (25) countries showed the latest technological developments on a net stand space of more than 15,126 (14 776) m². Besides the well-known companies, this year 100 (60) exhibitors participated for the first time. 10,600 (10,122) visitors from 87 (87) countries came to Vienna.

Selected quotes from exhibitors and visitors

More than 250 demonstrations: John Hawkins, Atex Group CEO, said: "This IfraExpo has been a huge success for the company. We showcased our full portfolio of solutions to manage digital news and advertising; hosting more than 600 vistors in 254 demonstrations on our stand. We were very pleased to be in Vienna, a city that gave us the opportunity of welcoming visitors from Eastern Countries including Ukraine, Lituania, Latvia, Czech Republic and Romania".

Excellent all round: Richard Elmer, Marketing Communications at Ferag, sums up as follows: "Very many visitors, high-quality discussions and attractive exhibition grounds with good service for the exhibitors – and Vienna is a very beautiful city . . ."

Extremely good exhibition: Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Deputy Chairman of the Board at KBA, praised the attractiveness of Vienna as well as its good and convenient accessibility: "Another positive aspect is the proximity of the exhibition grounds to Vienna city centre. We have had a constant stream of visitors on our stand since Monday morning. The customers also praise the exhibition."

Best start: Peter Michel, General Manager Kinyo Germany, a supplier of printing blankets, expressed his pleasure with the best exhibition start on a Monday since he first participated in 2002: "A start such as never before. Already in the first hour we were very busy and - as hoped - we had many visitors from Croatia, Poland, Romania and Hungary."

Very satisfied: Alexander Jacob of Livn, a supplier of CMS for media news, was very satisfied with his first-time participation in an IfraExpo: "We had high attendance levels at our presentations in the Solution Park and many contacts."

Unplanned signing of contracts: Christian Seitz, Head of Marketing at MAN Roland: "Right from the start, the numbers of visitors exceeded our expectations. The MAN Roland stand was bursting at the seams! We were even able to record unplanned sales, including a Colorman installation equipped with the new APL technology."

Very good organisation: Josef Humbert of Materna praises the very good organisation of the exhibition. As a first-time exhibitor, he was able to engage in interesting discussions about his products in the Solution Park: "We offer a mobile newspaper with its own newsroom and combine this with mobile advertising."

Many East European visitors: René Ulmann, Marketing Planner at Müller Martini, reports many visitors, including large numbers from Eastern Europe, who showed special interest in flexible and modular systems: "We were able to sign many contracts and talk to companies interested in investing."

Search for systems: P. T. Bashi, Deputy General Manager of Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing in India tells: "We are in Vienna to investigate inline stitching, UV curing solutions and CMS systems."

Also a cross-media show: Dalila Petronijevic, Marketing Director of NID Novost in Serbia, explains: "I came into the newspaper industry from television this year. For me this is not a machine and production expo, it covers a lot more including cross-media."

New contacts: Roman Gevers, Project Engineer, Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main in Germany, says: "We are here to obtain new contacts, to cultivate existing contacts and get answers to many questions developing through the year. And also to get to know the competitors."

IfraExpo 2008 again in Amsterdam –
under the motto: "Get the Big Picture!"

Next year IfraExpo will return to in Amsterdam (RAI: www.rai.nl): from 27 to 30 October 2008.

Ifra, the world’s leading organisation for newspaper and media publishing, has staged the most important meeting place for the newspaper industry since 1970. In 2008, the capital of the Netherlands will be the venue for the Annual Event of the Newspaper Industry for the 16th time. The motto then will be "Get the Big Picture!".

Ifra CEO Reiner Mittelbach: "IfraExpo is the only exhibition that presents all products and services for the media industry. It shows the complete picture, not just parts of it. At the same time it is an allegory for Ifra’s claim to be the leading platform for technology and business. It is vital for newspaper people."

Ifra appointed four new Board members

At Ifra’s 55th General Assembly of Members on 10 October 2007 in Vienna, the attending Ifra members elected four new Ifra Board members: Jan de Roos (NDC Holding BV, Groningen, The Netherlands), Kalle Jungkvist (Aftonbladet Nya Medier AB, Stockholm, Sweden), Luc Rademakers (Concentra Media NV, Hasselt, Belgium) and Tobias Trevisan (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung GmbH, Frankfurt/Main, Germany).

Re-elected were: Dr. Horst Pirker (Styria Medien AG, Graz, Austria) as Ifra President, Kevin Beatty (Associated Newspapers Ltd., London, United Kingdom) for the first time as Ifra Vice President and Tore Stangebye (Berner Gruppen AS, Oslo, Norway) as Ifra Treasurer as well as Rodolfo Alvarez-Rapaport (Empresa El Mercurio, S.A.P., Santiago, Chile) and Martin Kall (Tamedia AG, Zurich, Switzerland).
