Opel Astra 1.6 BiTurbo: Order Bank Opens for Top-of-the-Line Diesel

(lifePR) (Rüsselsheim, )
  • Supreme: Astra 1.6 BiTurbo Diesel delivers refinement as well as high performance
  • Sequential turbocharging: Twin turbos for high torque at any engine speed
  • SCR-technology: New Astra already meets Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard
Opel has opened the order bank for the new Astra 1.6 BiTurbo Diesel with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. The top-of-the-line Astra with sequential two-stage turbocharging – available as five-door hatchback and Sports Tourer estate – thus already meets the strict Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard, which includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measured on public roads.

The Astra 1.6 BiTurbo Diesel hatchback sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 7.1 seconds and keeps going up to a maximum speed of 225 km/h. This high performance blended with modest fuel consumption[1] (hatchback: 6.5-6.2 l/100 km urban, 4.2-4.0 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.0-4.8 l/100 km and 133-127 g/km CO2 combined; Sports Tourer: 6.7-6.3 l/100 km urban, 4.3-4.1 l/100 km extra-urban, 5.2-4.9 l/100 km and 137-131 g/km CO2 combined) makes the twin-turbo Astra one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the compact class.

In addition to the outstanding efficiency, drivability is the major highlight of the top-of-the-line 110 kW/150 hp engine. The maximum 350 Newton meters of torque are available from only 1,500-2,250 rpm. In combination with the low vehicle mass and direct throttle response, the Astra 1.6 BiTurbo Diesel gains speed quickly from low rpm. Mated to a crisp six-speed manual gearbox, the four-cylinder engine revs smoothly and progressively throughout its rpm range. The engine is also very refined, making the Astra’s passenger compartment a particularly quiet, comfortable and roomy space in which to travel.

In the SCR process for diesel engines, AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gas. The solution decomposes into ammonia. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) enter the catalyst in the exhaust gas, and are then selectively reduced to nitrogen and water.

The rapid transition to Euro 6d-TEMP compliancy is part of Opel’s strategy to become a leader in vehicle emissions reduction. The next steps toward this goal are the introduction of four electrified models by 2020, including the next generation Corsa, which will be available as a fully electric vehicle, and the Grandland X as the first plug-in hybrid from Opel. By 2024 Opel will become fully electrified, offering a hybrid or a battery electric version of every passenger car model alongside those powered by internal combustion engines.

Light, frugal, agile: Astra designed for maximum efficiency

The Astra – voted “Car of the Year” in Europe in 2016 – is one of the bestsellers in the Opel portfolio. Light, frugal and agile, while offering excellent comfort, the Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer exude efficiency with every component.

Despite compact exterior dimensions, occupants in the Astra enjoy particularly generous legroom – especially in the rear. The Sports Tourer can also carry up to 1,630 litres of luggage and the extensive load area is easy to access thanks to the optional power tailgate, which can be opened and shut with a simple kicking motion under the bumper.

In addition to featuring a host of driver assistance systems such as Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, the Astra is the first car in its class to be made available with full LED matrix headlamps. IntelliLux LED® matrix lighting on the Astra consists of 16 LED segments – eight on each side of the vehicle – that automatically and constantly adapt the length and distribution of the light beam to every situation, without glare for oncoming traffic.

The optional equipment for the Astra also includes infotainment systems that can be operated by touch-screen, remote controls on the steering wheel and voice recognition. They additionally allow operation of suitably-equipped smartphones via the phone’s voice-control system, such as Siri or Google Assistant, and they are compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Prices in Germany begin at €27,720 including VAT for the Opel Astra 1.6 BiTurbo Diesel five-door hatchback
