(lifepr) (Röthenbach, 10.12.2013) Most websites of companies convey Christmas greetings in text format. Instead, the portal www.deafservice.de presents "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!" in different sign languages. Deaf people from England, China, Australia, Russia, France, Hungary, America, Finland and Germany sign here in their own language. Currently there are nine posts online that are continuously updated with additional languages.
In Germany live 14 million hearing impaired, approximately 200,000 people communicate in sign language. Yet, the society has little information about this disability.
"With this action I want to show the diversity of sign languages and sensitize our society for the deaf culture. Hearing people often think that sign language is internationally uniform. The spot shows clearly that each country has its own sign language", said Judit Nothdurft, the operator of the portal.
On www.deafservice.de deaf / hard of hearing find qualified sign language addresses of competent partners nationwide. Initiator and operator Judit Nothdurft privately largely finances the portal on her own. This is a unique project in Germany and thus also provides important support for an independent and barrier-free life.
