ZDF's three-part series "Ku'damm 59": filming starts in Berlin
ZDF Enterprises in charge of global distribution of sequel to "Ku'damm 56"
“Ku’damm 59” focuses on the women of that generation, who were in search of a new feminine identity. Issues such as emancipation, family structures and the desire for female self-determination are at the heart of the series. The biographies of the Schöllack family are typical of women of that era, whose lives were often governed by clearly defined social expectations and their position by the side of the husband.
Berlin 1959: Monika (Sonja Gerhardt) and Freddy (Trystan Pütter) are pursuing careers as musicians and dancers, while their mother Caterina (Claudia Michelsen) never leaves their side as their manager - forever mindful of social conventions. Meanwhile, Helga (Maria Ehrich) has come to terms with Wolfgang’s (August Wittgenstein) homosexuality and is trying to be a good mother. However, her love for Wolfgang and her desire for a middle-class lifestyle are put to the test once more when she discovers that her husband is having an affair. The marriage of Eva (Emilia Schüle) and Prof Fassbender (Heino Ferch) has yet to produce a child and Eva feels unable to live up to her role as a professor’s wife. When Monika’s life and career plans hit a brick wall, she decides that she wants a different future for herself and her daughter Dorli – and turns everyone’s lives upside down once again.
“Ku’damm 59” is a UFA Fiction production for ZDF with ZDF Enterprises handling the global distribution. The series is produced by Benjamin Benedict and Nico Hofmann, with Marc Lepetit as executive producer. The ZDF editorial team includes Heike Hempel, Bastian Wagner and Beate Bramstedt.
