"ABT Young Guns" perfectly prepared for season opener
- ADAC GT Masters season starts at Oschersleben on 10/11 April
- Kuba Giermaziak completes youngest driver squad of all time
- Daniel Abt starts to his first season in the ATS Formula 3 Cup
With high aims, a healthy dose of self-confidence and new faces, Team ABT Sportsline will start into the 2010 motorsport year next weekend (10/11 April). The Motorsport Arena Oschersleben will see the ADAC GT Masters, in which the Kempten-based squad will try to defend Christian Abt's title with two Audi R8 LMS cars and the ATS Formula 3 Cup stage their season openers. After winning Formula ADAC, Daniel Abt will contest his first race in the German Championship for the Van Amersfoort Racing team, thus igniting the next stage of his still young career.
"After the long winter break, it goes without saying that we're very excited about the first race weekend to start," says Christian Abt. The reigning GT Masters Champion will switch to the pit wall this season to support the squad as team boss. "We've vigorously prepared for the challenges. Of course it's hard to top a season like 2009 - still, we've got to continue shooting for victories."
GT Masters: Kuba Giermaziak completes "Abt Young Guns"
Right in time for the season opener ABT Sportsline's driver line-up has been completed: the Pole Kuba Giermaziak will partner with Jens Klingmann in the Audi R8 LMS designated as car number 2. The sister car - number one - will be driven by Luca Ludwig and Christopher Mies. The Kempten-based team will thus compete with the youngest squad of all time. The average age of the four young guns is below 20. "The statisticians are lucky that I'm no longer driving myself," says 42-yearold Christian Abt with a smile. Looking at the new season, he feels no wistfulness, though: "We've definitely got one of the strongest line-ups in a field that is high-calibre anyway. It's true that the temptation to take a gentleman driver with a budget into the team was high. But ABT Sportsline's spirit has always been to fight for victories and titles. We're extremely well set for that now."
The races start on Saturday and Sunday at 12, respectively. kabel eins TV will air live broadcasts on both days starting at 11:45 a.m.
ATS Formula 3 Cup: Daniel Abt ignites next career stage
Oschersleben will see Daniel Abt start a new stage in his still young motorsport career: the 17-year-old from Kempten who captured last year's ADAC Formula Masters title with a commanding performance will start into his first Formula 3 season with the van Amersfoort Racing team. Before the season opener the Volkswagen Junior reports that he's ready to go as well: "I've really gelled with my new team," says Daniel Abt. Not just off but also on the track the youngster has gathered plenty of experience with his new equipment, the Volkswagen-Dallara 307.
After track tests at Misano, Assen, Hockenheim and Oschersleben Abt presents a positive summary. "I'm learning to handle the car better and better and am already feeling really comfortable in the cockpit." Therefore, the self-confidence with which he states his goals for the season opener at the circuit in the flatlands around Magdeburg comes as no surprise: "Of course the first few races will be about finishing. But then I'll shoot for the top five."
The races at Oschersleben start on Saturday and Sunday at 2:40 p.m., respectively, and will last about 30 minutes.
GT Masters on TV: Rainer Braun will be the live commentator for kabel eins
The ABT Sportsline squad is not only pleased with the live broadcasts of the GT Masters races on kabel eins but also with the voice on the mike: Rainer Braun will provide expert commentaries on all 14 rounds of the series. The commentator legend accompanied the first foray of the Abt squad into the DTM at the beginning of the new millennium. And that's not all: "Rainer Braun was already the commentator at my first races in a formula car," recalls Christian Abt. "It's nice that we'll meet again now that he's making the comeback which many fans have been waiting for."
