»Don Giovanni« returns with some fresh faces

Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, Iulia Maria Dan and Elena Gorshunova to make their debuts in this Dresden production of the Mozart opera

(lifePR) ( Dresden, )
When the curtain rises at the Semperoper next Wednesday, 22 May, for the 16th performance of Andreas Kriegenburg’s staging of »Don Giovanni«, this returning production of Mozart’s classic opera will feature some fresh faces. Two artists will make their role debuts and one artist will appear for the first time on the Semperoper stage. The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden will perform under conductor Omer Meir Wellber, since Season 2018/19 Principal Guest Conductor of the Semperoper Dresden.

Semperoper debut for Ildebrando D’Arcangelo

The opera star »doesn’t do Don Giovanni, he is the Don«, according to Gazzetta di Parma, impressed by Ildebrando D’Arcangelo’s interpretation of this psychologically multifaceted erotomaniac. The Italian bass baritone has already captivated opera audiences around the world with his ability to plumb the depths of Mozart’s »homme fatal«.  In the 2018/19 season, he will make his debut at the Saxon State Opera in this role.

Role debuts for Iulia Maria Dan and Elena Gorshunova

Also in the current season, two leading sopranos are making their role debuts in »Don Giovanni». In May, the Russian singer Elena Gorshunova will perform the role of Donna Anna for the first time (appearing as a guest artist at the Semperoper), while in June, Romania’s Iulia Maria Dan will make her first appearance as Donna Elvira.

Following her successful Dresden debut in 2010 as Sophie in »Der Rosenkavalier«, Elena Gorshunova was an ensemble member of the Semperoper until 2013. The internationally acclaimed and award-winning soprano was previously engaged for eight years at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, where she developed a broad repertoire. As a guest in Dresden, Ms Gorshunova will also perform the roles of Susanna, Konstanze, Cleopatra and Musetta in the current season.

Another multi-prize winning artist, the Romanian singer Iulia Maria Dan left Hamburg State Opera this season to join the ensemble of Dresden State Opera, where in 2017 she debuted in Mozart’s »Così fan tutte« as Fiordiligi. In 2018/19 Dresden audiences can enjoy Ms Dan in »Le nozze di Figaro«, »Hänsel und Gretel« as well as in new productions of »Platée« and »Nabucco«.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s »Don Giovanni« returns to the Semperoper, Dresden, at 7 pm on Wednesday, 22 May 2019.
Additional performances on 26 May, 16 and 20 June 2019.
