Gerhard Marcks and his Friends

Weimar's opening event for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus School shows unusual positions in and beyond the Bauhaus

The sculptor Gerhard Marcks (1889–1981) belonged to the first teachers at the Weimar Bauhaus in 1919 and was one of the most engaged artists in the renewal of the arts through craftsmanship. He was surrounded by a network of faithful colleagues who spread this artistic understanding among schools and communities far beyond the borders of Europe. From 17 August until 5 November 2017, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen will present the first comprehensive exhibition about this unique circle of artists, opening up a new perspective of a Bauhaus beyond industry and standardisation.

“It is no coincidence that we are showing the works of Gerhard Marcks as our first major contribution to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus’ founding”, points out Wolfgang Holler, General Director of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar’s museums. “After World War II, the first Bauhaus exhibition that was presented by the Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar at the Kunsthalle at Theater Square, now the Bauhaus Museum, was dedicated to Gerhard Marcks. Now the Klassik Stiftung presents this extraordinary artist in its last large Bauhaus exhibition before the new bauhaus museum weimar is opened.” Arie Hartog, Director of the Gerhard Marcks House in Bremen emphasises: “It is important to see Marcks in this context. He is known as a figurative sculptor, but few understand the Bauhaus connection.”

Along with Ernst Barlach, Georg Kolbe and Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Gerhard Marcks belonged to the most significant of the figurative sculptors in Germany. Invited to join the staff of the Bauhaus School by Walter Gropius in 1919, he was the form master of the ceramic workshop in Dornburg from 1920 until 1924. Together with his students, who included the ceramicist Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain (1896–1985), the silversmith Wolfgang Tümpel (1903–1978) and the painter Johannes Driesch (1901–1930), Marcks searched for a synthesis of ceramics, sculpture and painting in order to unite the separated spheres of art and of daily life. Marcks and his artist circle, as followers of the traditional craftsmanship ethos, rejected the changing orientation towards the production of prototypes by the Bauhaus for industrial production; they took the opportunity of the Bauhaus’ move to Dessau to leave and pursue their own paths.

With over 200 high-quality objects including sculptures, drawings, paintings and ceramics, the exhibition traces the first years shared by the group in Dornburg, then follows the artists’ fruitful exchange of ideas after the Bauhaus period and throughout the years of the National Socialist regime reaching as far as the USA. The highlights include the “Abstract Figure”(Abstrakte Figur) by Oskar Schlemmer, the relief “Woman with baby” (Frau mit Säugling) by Gerhard Marcks as well as ceramics by Marguerite Friedlaender-Wildenhain from California or metal objects by Wolfgang Tümpel.

The results of the DFG (German Research Community) research project at the Brandenburg Technical University Cottus-Senftenberg and the University of Erfurt, “Moving Networks. Members of the Bauhaus and their friendship networks during the 1930s and 1940s” (Bewegte Netze. Bauhaus-Angehörige und ihre Beziehungsnetzwerke in den 1930er- und 1940er-Jahren) were essential to the conception of the exhibition. An interactive media station developed during the project and photographic and film documentation help to grasp the artistic transfer of ideas of the circle of friends surrounding Marcks until his death in 1981.

A comprehensive programme of events and educational opportunities supplements the exhibition. Artists, art historians and craftspeople will show the visitors through the exhibition in three dialogue-like conversational tours. The “Form Laboratory” offers the whole family the opportunity to create their own pitchers, cups and vases, inspired by the objects they have seen at the exhibition.

The Form Laboratory in Weimar is a project of the programme Bauhaus Agents – an initiative of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes and the Klassik Stiftung Weimar / bauhaus museum weimar, the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau and the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin.

The exhibition “Paths from the Bauhaus. Gerhard Marcks and his circle of friends” (Wege aus dem Bauhaus. Gerhard Marcks und sein Freundeskreis) is supported by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, the Free State of Thuringia, the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne, the Sparkassen-Kulturstifung Hessia-Thuringia and the Sparkasse Mittelthüringen.

After the Weimar exhibition, “Wege aus dem Bauhaus. Gerhard Marcks und sein Freundeskreis” will be shown in Bremen from 26 November 2017 until 4 March 2018 at the Gerhard Marcks House.
