Keisuke Shirota

Reception: November 26, 2010, 6 - 9 PM / Exhibit: November 27, 2010 - January 8, 2011

(lifePR) (Köln, ) Galerie Stefan Röpke is pleased to announce its second solo exhibition for Japanese artist Keisuke Shirota on view November 27, 2010 to January 8, 2011.

With this new body of work, Keisuke Shirota continues to include photography in his painting practice. The seamless combination of casual photography with a precise painting style challenges the expected perceptions of both practices, reversing their respective traditional roles in the work. The photographs supply color and painterly expressiveness while paint, limited to shades of grey and black, appear graphic and coolly documentary.

For this exhibition Shirota also presents works with greater complexity and larger scale. By using multiple photographs and perspectives, and sometimes working on numerous panels, the works capture time by compressing various moments into one, adding an eerie cinematic personality to the new works. A video by the artist will also be presented at this exhibition; a collage of seemingly random and "accidental" moments creating poetic and expressive imagery.

Keisuke Shirota was born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1975 where he currently lives and works. His works have been shown extensively in Japan, including at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and the Kawasaki City Museum. The artist will be present for the opening reception on November 26, 2010 from 6-9 pm.
