Iva Gueorguieva: Battles

(lifePR) (Köln, ) Galerie Stefan Röpke is pleased to present Battles, Iva Gueorguieva's first solo-exhibition at the gallery, on view April 19 - June 1, 2013.

Gueorguieva utilizes a wide range of mark-making techniques, from large brushstrokes and delicate drawing lines, to roughly-cut collaged elements, to create paintings filled with an energy that seems at first chaotic but proves in the end extremely cohesive. Each work begins with a visual proposition that engages specific formal questions or types of process. For example a painting can start as a series of washes, where chance plays a significant role, or it can start as a serial procedure. As the work evolves, various influences steer it in other directions. Personal experiences and memories, dreams, art-historical references, as well as social and political forces, all play a potential role in the progress of the work. Each painting contains its own layering of coincidences and clusters of meaning.

The paintings in this exhibition engage the metaphor as well as the reality of the painting as battle or battlefield. The metaphor applies to the artist's process with the canvas, her working through experiences, as well as to the large-scale economic and geopolitical systems the works document. The canvases are saturated with warring dichotomies: large tumultuous systems versus delicate bodies; techno-science versus sorcery; atmosphere versus the terrestrial; human-centric systems of order versus entropy and decay.

Gueorguieva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a Masters of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States, most recently at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles, CA; Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe, New York, NY; and Bravin Lee Programs, New York, NY. Her works have also been presented in public institutions such as the Contemporary Art Museum at USF, Tampa, FL; and the Pasadena Museum of Art, Pasadena, CA. She was the recipient of the California Community Foundation mid-career fellowship in 2010 and the Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2006.

Her work is included in many public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN.
