Maria, breit den Mantel aus... - On Believing in Miracles and Strange Epiphanies

Helmut & Johanna Kandl

(lifePR) (Berlin, ) Curated by Dorothee Bienert and Antje Weitzel

Opening Friday 31.05.2013, 6 pm Inroduction by Dorothee Bienert, Curator

Duration 1. Juni - 28. Juli 2013

For several years, one can observe a renewed interest in religion and spirituality. Pilgrimages to sacred sites are booming, reflecting the longing for new perspectives on life and nature. Why do people believe in epiphany and the potency of objects such as statues of saints, images or relics?

The exhibition presents a body of works by Helmut & Johanna Kandl, including paintings, collages, objects and videos, exploring pilgramages to Marian shrines like at Altoetting, Lourdes, Medjugorje, Levoca or Guadalupe, Mexico City. The artists take a look at the various region specific cultural imprints on pilgrimages, but also their importance for tourism and the making of "pilgrim events" in the digital age. They observe these complex phenomena with respect, but also with humor. Helmut & Johanna Kandl's research is also a quest for the "female side" of God and the role model it is based on.

The exhibition is part of the festival 48 Stunden Neukölln. On June 15, 2013 at 5 p.m. the artist will talk about "Wondering: on pilgrims, six-finger Madonnas and flying houses".
