Healthy sleep - healthy back

(lifePR) (Selsingen, )
In the first half of 2015, diseases of the musculoskeletal system such as backache topped the list for days of absence due to illness in Germany, according to the current Health Report by the DAK (statutory health insurance provider1). Many people actually develop their problems literally in their sleep: unsuitable beds, mattresses or slatted frames can cause massive tension. The Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR) explains the significance of the right bed system for restful sleep and a healthy back.

You make your bed and lie in it

Those who do not sleep well in the long term often feel exhausted in the morning. Performance levels and concentration suffer, with productive working almost inconceivable. When the consequences of sleeping badly are also accompanied by regular tension in the neck and back, it may well be time to check the bed. After all, this may be the source of all the problems.

We spend about one third of our lives asleep. We should therefore give more priority to our bed than to any other item in our home. But this is often not the case. Many people buy the next-best or cheapest bed and accessories, or just replace the mattress. But a new mattress will often fail to have the desired effect if the slatted frame beneath it can no longer cope with the demands made of it every night. The intervertebral disks that are exposed naturally to considerable loads everyday are then no longer able to regenerate adequately at night and the muscles don't relax properly. The tricky thing here is that the consequences are usually not noticed directly but only become apparent in the course of time. Waking up tense and unrested in the morning or feeling that you are never really comfortable in bed are sure alarm signs that the bed is not correct. Experts agree that the traditional combination of bed frame, wooden slatted frame and mattress is out of date. But what is the most important feature of a modern and, above all, back-friendly bed? The Campaign for Healthier Backs (AGR) names a few vital prerequisites:

  1. The whole bed system must be seen in its entirety so that the individual components (spring base, mattress, pillow) also suit each other.
  2. The bed system must be coordinated individually to the person sleeping in it, with corresponding adjustment to weight and body shape.
  3. The human body needs freedom to move, even when asleep. The bed system should encourage the natural urge to turn over in the night.
  4. The right size of bed: single beds should be at least 100 cm wide; for the length, 20 cm is added to the body size.
  5. The mattress must also satisfy the subjective lying and comfort perception of the person sleeping in it.
  6. The golden rule for double beds is that each person needs their own bed system. This is the only way to meet the needs of both backs.
One problem, two solutions with AGR seal of approval

But how can it be possible to make one bed system suitable for different people to sleep in with differing physical constitution and individual sleeping habits? To this end, the beds need an adjustable spring base. On the spring base, there is an adaptable mattress that takes due consideration of the needs of the person sleeping on it and forms a perfect unit in combination with the spring base. This system guarantees the best possible adaptation and support in every position and every night. It fosters the unconscious, natural and necessary movement sequences and changes in position during the night. Among others, it is particularly important for the intervertebral disks to have ideal conditions for regeneration and "nourishment".

Lattoflex has developed a flexible, resilient spring base as a consistent further development of the traditional wooden slatted frame. The patented wing spring system minimises the body contact surface and adapts to all contours and movements, thus enhancing sleeping comfort and relieving the spinal column. The permeable, adaptable Lattoflex mattress rounds off the back-friendly bed system. The spring base is made of a high-tech material that is also used in aircraft engineering because of its flexibility and fatigue-free properties. What about your shoulder when you sleep on your side? Lattoflex has designed the shoulder zone as an absorbing suspension bridge to relieve the pressure. As a result, the throat and neck are more comfortable with fewer tension problems.

The spring base by Metzeler consists of an insert frame with adjustable elements. Depending on the person's build, body weight and sleeping preferences (on the back, stomach or side), harder and softer elements can be integrated in the spring base to give the spinal column the right support at all times. The most important attributes of the mattress include maximum adaptability and optimum air circulation. The AGR-certified mattresses by Metzeler are equipped with a special system of air channels and air pipes. They ensure that air can circulate for ideal vertical ventilation of the mattress. The mattress is also divided into zones, with softer air channels at the shoulders so that the cold foam material can adapt to the body shape.

Sleep well!

Choosing the right bed system is the first and biggest step towards sleeping well and relaxing properly. But sleeping problems are often caused by several factors at once. The AGR has some tips to help you fall asleep and sleep through the night:

  1. Ensure you have a healthy sleeping climate. Above all, this means not having the bedroom too warm, with 16 to 18°C seen as the ideal temperature, with humidity levels preferably between 40 and 60%. The best way to ensure a plentiful supply of fresh air is to open the windows wide briefly just before going to bed.
  2. Switch off all mobile phones, tablets and electronic devices before you go to bed. They should be kept out of the bedroom. Surfing on the internet before going to bed will be distracting and make it harder to fall asleep. The display lighting also makes many people feel restless.
  3. Eating rich food just before you go to bed is more likely to prevent you from falling asleep. It is therefore better just to have a light meal in the evening, or at least to leave enough time between finishing your meal and going to bed.
  4. Alcohol can also considerably impair the quality of your sleep. Although consuming alcohol often makes us fall asleep more easily, we are likely to be restless and wake up frequently during the night.
  5. A bit of exercise in the evening helps to fall asleep and sleep through the night. This certainly does not mean an intensive training session: instead, a gentle walk or short bike ride can be beneficial. The fresh air also helps you to relax.
About the Campaign for Healthier Backs and the AGR seal of approval

The Campaign for Healthier Backs has been dedicated to the prevention and therapy of endemic backache since it was founded in 1995. Its "certified & recommended" seal of approval is an important decision-making aid for consumers. Various everyday products from various different parts of life, including bed systems, chairs and leisure equipment, can be awarded the seal of approval following strict testing by a committee of medical and therapeutic experts and being classified as particularly back-friendly. IN BRIEF

If you feel tense and unrested in the mornings, you should check your bed. According to the Campaign for Healthier Backs, Selsingen, the problems are often caused by the mattress or slatted frame. The most important thing for modern bed systems is that the bed is adapted to the person sleeping in it, his build and sleeping habits, and not vice versa. Various innovative designs of spring base and mattress meet these requirements. They offer ideal support for the spinal column, relieving pressure and making backache first thing in the morning a thing of the past.
