Suggested Revisions to 2nd Revised Draft of the World Anti-Doping Code (Version 2.0)

(lifepr) Berlin, 02.08.2007, The International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) has finished the requested revision of the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC). The Council is in strong support of a doping-free sport as only this allows for equal and fair competition for all athletes, and maintains public confidence in elite sport. While the WADC does address the necessary cooperation between national governments and sport federations, as well as legislation and anti-doping rules in some sections, ICSSPE suggests that the entire WADC describes the extent of cooperation between sport federations and government authorities. This cooperation should ensure that legislation and anti-doping rules operate concurrently.

ICSSPE recommends the use of similar terminology in the WADC and UNESCO's International Convention Against Doping. The Council also suggests the WADC uses simple wording so that athletes and their teams can easily understand the document.

ICSSPE will continue to assist in future revisions to the WADC, as it needs to be continually refined, taking into account new developments like genetic technology.
These comments were prepared by ICSSPE Executive Board Members Lauri Tarasti (Chairman, IAAF Juridical Commission; former Justice, Supreme Administrative Court of Finland) and Michael McNamee (Speaker Associations' Board; Centre of Philosophy and Health Care, University of Wales Swansea). This work was done upon the World Anti-Doping Agency's request for a stakeholder review and consultation of the WADC.
