Miele appliances with long track record of saving energy

(lifePR) (Gütersloh, ) Approximately 90% of energy input throughout a machine's cradle-to-grave life cycle occurs during use in consumers' homes. For a manufacturer producing such durable domestic appliances as Miele, this represents a particular challenge. The answer is to continuously improve energy efficiency combined with the use of mature, innovative technology and a wide range of functions and services.

Energy saving

All Miele appliances are designed to be as energy-efficient as possible. Miele has never been one for packing all its green credentials into a single flagship model: The entire range of products is designed for energy efficiency - and not just since yesterday. The energy label - prescribed by the EU for certain domestic appliances - provides information on how effective Miele's activities are. All washing machines and dishwashers are A-rated for energy efficiency. Washing machines are even 10% more economical than required for an A-rating. On the refrigeration side, more than 95% of fridges and freezers have an A, A+ or A++ rating.

Conservation of natural resources

Climate change and scarcer natural resources are themes which dominate the media. A responsible approach to resources is firmly embedded in the Miele company's philosophy and history. Miele as a brand stands for highest quality and product longevity. In endurance testing, appliances are put through their paces in a 5000-cycle routine equating to an average 20 years of use. Miele's benchmark is higher than that of any other domestic appliance maker. According to GfK, the consumer research people, Miele washing machines and tumble dryers last an average of 18.5 or 18.6 years respectively. Products from other manufacturers, by comparison, only last 12.4 or 11.8 years.

At the end of a long service life, Miele appliances can be recycled easily. A high percentage of metals - no less than 85% on washing machines - guarantees the re-use of valuable materials and the sparing use of resources. The plastics used are easily recycled and have a clean bill of health. This is guaranteed in part by the fact that Miele produces around 70% of all plastics at its own injection moulding plant.

There is little risk of products becoming technically outdated on account of their extended life expectancy. For several years now, savings have reached a level where further economies seem unlikely based on current technological developments. On washing machines, Miele has already achieved reductions in water consumption of more than 42% and almost 30% electricity savings compared with 1990. Improving on this is very difficult, unless someone perhaps finds a way of producing spotless results without water. Besides this, Miele launched the 'Update' programme in 1995 with which programmes on domestic machines can be updated to incorporate the latest improvements.
