Thomas Beckmann and Cantico Regensburg play for the Holy Father

Düsseldorf cellist and vocal ensemble of Regensburg are giving a concert for the Pope in Castel Gandolfo on August 11th

(lifePR) (Bremen, ) "Beckmann's melody on the cello is of imcomparable beauty. His warm tone is deeply touching. He moves on his instrument with fascinating smoothness, and he has found a new, very personal way of playing the cello. He is forging the way into the future for our instrument."

This was said by the cellist of the century Pierre Fournier about his favourite student Thomas Beckmann. The Düsseldorf cellist will be playing in the inner courtyard of Castel Gandolfo on Saturday, August 11th for Pope Benedikt XVIth and his brother Georg Ratzinger, the former director of music of Regensburg Cathedral. The Regensburg vocal ensemble will be singing spiritual works from the German Romantics. The concert will take place in an exclusive setting, in front of 150 specially invited guests.

"The encounter with the Holy Father in this hour of music fills us with deep gratitude. It will lend us new energy for our commitment for people in need", Beckmann says. The star cellist is a professing Catholic and was an altar boy in his youth. It is his conviction that "without the Church the world would be a poorer place". The Church has always been a serving one, too, raising its voice worldwide against poverty, discrimination and exploitation. Music is a voice in the service of this goal which is understood all over the globe. After a long period of absence, Beckmann's seriously ill wife will return from Japan to Europe. The pianist will play the accompaniment in Beethoven's Sonata in A-Major. "We enrich with our music, and in return are enriched ourselves" Beckmann believes. Yuko Kasahara, who accompanied Beckmann during Kayoko's illness, will accompany a piece by Ravel.

Beckmann has given four guest concerts in Regensburg, always in support of the work of Caritas in the Pope's home diocese. Georg Ratzinger was the patron of those concerts which impressed him deeply. Therefore the concert in Castel Gandolfo is also organised in cooperation with the Caritas of Regensburg, which celebrates the 90th anniversary of its foundation this year. "It gives us great pleasure to be able to offer the Holy Father this gift of music in this year of his 85th birthday. As the Regensburg association of the Caritas we feel a special affinity with the Pope. It is no secret that the Pope is a great lover of music", Dr. Roland Batz, director of the Diözesan-Caritas, says.

Thomas Beckmann's Commitment for the Homeless

Since 1996, Beckmann, as founder of the charity "Gemeinsam gegen Kälte e.V." (Fighting the Cold together) has undertaken concert tours throughout the whole of Germany, playing in churches and concert halls and donating the entire proceeds including his fees to his charity. During those concerts the artist played his legendary "Il Mendicante" cello from the golden era of the famous violin maker and Stradivari apprentice G.B. Guadagnini. Thus the instrument unfolds its rich orchestral sound and far-reaching pianissimo not only as an expression of fascinating musical virtuosity, but also as a moving musical message against human cold-heartedness.

Thomas Beckmann's Awards

Thomas Beckmann and his wife Kayoko, a Japanese pianist and Schumann expert, have been decorated with many prizes, among them the "prize of German Recording Critics", the "European Prize for Social Commitment", the "Order of Merit of the Republic of Germany" and the "Order of the Federal State of Northrhine-Westfalia". In 2010 Thomas Beckmann (55) was awarded the "Citizens' Prize of German Newspapers" for his social commitment. The jury, consisting of around 50 chief editors of the National Association of German Editors, honoured him as the first recipient of this decoration as "Citizen of the Year". Beckmann was chosen from an extensive list of prominent Germans from all walks of life.

Vocal Ensemble Cantico Regensburg

The vocal ensemble Cantico Regensburg was founded in 1993. Male and female singers, aged between 22 and 40, (from all over Bavaria) constitute this choir. They all have their roots in Regensburg or the surrounding countryside, the home of the Holy Father and his brother Georg Ratzinger. The male voices are former cathedral choir boys, the "Regensburger Domspatzen". The mixed choir presents demanding choral works at a high level. In recent years the choir had guest appearances at such renowned Bavarian concert festivals as "Musik im Pfaffenwinkel", "Nürnberger Kirchenmusiktage", "Musiksommer zwischen Inn und Salzach". There the young members of the choir worked together with well-known orchestras and instrumental groups. The social commitment of the choir deserves a special mention. Funds are raised for church-run institutions and many charitable causes. In 2008 Cantico Regensburg cooperated for the first time with the Düsseldorf cellist Thomas Beckmann and his charity "Gemeinsam gegen Kälte e.V.". Choir leader Edeltraud Appl (*1956) was awarded the honorary medal of the region of Regensburg for her musical and social work in the fields of youth and choir work.
